LinkedIn Tip of the Week: How to secretly let recruiters know you're looking for a job

Now you can let the world know that you're open to a possible change of jobs. LinkedIn is rolling out a new feature which let's you communicate to recruiters which kind of jobs you're interested in - without letting your boss know.

Here's how you enable it:

  1. Go to the Preferences page of LinkedIn's Jobs section
  2. Toggle the "Let recruiters know you're open" switch to the On position
  3. Make sure that you also fill out your job preferences below the switch

If you don't see the switch on the page, it's because the feature hasn't been rolled out in your region yet. At the time of writing, it is available in USA, the UK, Australia and Canada but the rest of the world will soon follow suit.

Be careful

There is one caveat, though. LinkedIn automatically decides who can see your availability status based on which LinkedIn Premium account type is used. Only users with a (rather expensive) Recruiter account can see your job availability - but this doesn't protect your status from being seen by recruiters working at your current company.

Hopefully, LinkedIn will tighten up this feature soon. So make sure you're subscribed to our newsletter - we will let you know when the feature is ready for prime time.
